Beskrivelse

Volume I and II. This is a delight to read. It is a rare treat to read the intimate correspondence between two such gifted writers. Many writers now seem so self-obsessed with their talents that it becomes obnoxious, but these letters offer the reader a glimpse of genius in private. Their writing, reflecting their thinking, is brilliant. In the earlier letters in particular, Barrett seems almost the brighter and sharper thinker, but one gets the impression that Browning was being rather chivalrous and perhaps a bit demeaning in his manner with her. But as their relationship grows, and we begin reading letters they wrote to each other between secret personal visits, we can really sense the relaxing tone. But their habit of discussing their hearts’ desires in the most beautiful expressions and images continues. One gets the impression from reading these letters that the two of them must have found the rest of society quite tedious and inexpressive.
