Composer, performer, concert organizer and teacher, Clara Schumann (1819-1896) was one of the most famous women of her age. In 1828, at the age of nine, she had her debut as a soloist at the Leipzig Gewandhaus. She traveled widely and was celebrated in England as the greatest pianist of her time. But Clara voluntarily withdrew into the shadow of her husband, Robert Schumann, the genius composer of German Romanticism, whom she married against her father’s wishes. He was the love of her life, yet she survived him by four decades, during which she became the muse of Johannes Brahms.
