This is a splendid and quite comprehensive study of the composer’s life and work, published just 5 years after his death. Michael Kennedy is a well-known journalist and music critic, the author of more than twenty books on a wide variety of subjects in music. The treatment of Britten’s life and work is chronological and various compositions are discussed in some detail in the appropriate period. There are also several interesting and illuminating photographs dispersed throughout the book. This book is another in the Master Musicians Series so has the characteristic of other titles of including as Appendixes a Calendar of events, a List of Works, another Appendix with details of Britten’s friends, a Bibliography and Discography in addition to the usual Index. The book provides an excellent introduction to Britten and a useful sourcebook for listeners to his music.
