A widow’s biography of a noted singer and music administrator of the first part of the 20th century. successful on the concert platform between the wars, in particular as the Evangelist in Bach’s St Matthew passion. Lady Wilson gives interesting details of his libel action against the BBC over criticism of his performance as the Evangelist which, to many people’s surprise he won hands down. This may have set new limits on excessive criticism of performers. This did not prevent him becoming Controller of Music when the post in 1947. She records he often crossed swords with Corporation bureaucrats but is less convincing in her defence of his part on the scandalous sacking of the founder-conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Adrian Boult, which she attempts to blame on others.
