Although the Center Counter is almost five hundred years old, the first known recorded instance of the defense being the game Castellvi-Vinoles in 1485, it remains a theoretical enigma. Most modern theorists treat it with disdain, considering surprise it’s chief virtue. Consequently it’s appearance in grandmaster chess has always been sporadic.
