Without being in any sense an apologia, this book helps the reader to understand the psychology of a man who is too easily vilified by his detractors, often for imagined or spurious reasons. It emerges that Wagner was admired and indeed liked by many people that he met, that he exercised enormous charm over those who were determined to dislike him and that he despite his reputation for being an indulgent sybarite, surrounded by furs, silks perfumes and debt, he in fact displayed superhuman perseverance and was prepared to undergo considerable suffering in his attempt to bring a new kind of art to light.
