Vogel had known and worked with Janacek, and was a fine conductor of his works, a man of wide culture both musical and otherwise, and so the shade of Janacek must have rejoiced somewhere in his Slavonic Elysium that it was Vogel who was chosen to write his first biography and the first really exhaustive study of his works.
