The axis on which “The Pretenders'” story turns is a dead man, the rich and ruthless businessman-cum-Hollywood producer Harry Bell. It’s at his funeral that we meet the titular pretenders: Andre (né Arnold) Sherman, a developer who’s only a success in his own mind (and his mother’s); Rick Flinders, a blond movie god who wants the beautiful married socialite Diane Trejinska, first out of love, then out of revenge; Maggie Bolin, an insanely wealthy heiress who is, in fact, insane; and our heroine, Louise Felder, a smart-alecky gossip columnist who desperately wants to be a part of the “in-crowd,” and her relationship with Harry Bell just might be the ticket to secure a place at the table–if she allows herself to be used by Bell’s lawyer and his PR man in an inheritance battle.
