The great Swedish soprano Elisabeth Soderstrom’s autobiography (102 pages) is a delight to read. Her gentle humour is an absolute pleasure and she communicates well and succinctly with her readers. She has the rare talent of making the reader feel as if they know her. Elisabeth’s talent led her to become one of the greatest sopranos of her generation. Elisabeth speaks of not wanting to become an international star and describes the problems all opera singer’s face throughout their career. With her lack of pretention and the great gift she had, it is easy to see why she was greatly loved by audiences both at Glyndbourne, England, and in her own country. I was not fortunate enough to hear Elisabeth in person, however there are many recordings available and a lovely documentary. This book is one not to be missed if you love opera.
