Herbert Howells is a giant of 20th century Anglican church music, the remainder of whose oeuvre is in the process of gaining new appreciation. The book is widely considered a trail-blazing study, a work of essential reading for those intrigued by the work of this composer.As well as being a writer on music and a biographer of musicians, the author Christopher Palmer was himself a most accomplished composer and arranger.
