This study is the first in English to offer a detailed & accurate companion to Janacek’s mature series operas. The introduction describes the essential conditions for tragedy & shows how Janacek realized its characteristic effect in the musical idiom of his opera. The individual chapters discuss the human issues raised by the libretti, & the ways in which Janacek’s music communicates what he has to say about them. Each chapter gives a commentary on the action of the opera as it unfolds, providing an interpretation of each significant point in both the music & the stage drama.
