This book is a must read for any classical music lover who wants to get at the truth of Wilhelm Furtwangler’s still controversial role in Nazi Germany. Berta Geissmar was Furtwangler’s manager until her Jewishness forced her to emigrate to Great Britain in the 1930s. She then served the same role for Sir Thomas Beecham, and her narrative clarifies his role during the late ’30s as well. Her memoirs are sometimes disturbing, but always illuminating, an interesting and informative look at the real men who were two of the greatest conductors of the 20th Century.
