Arnold’s music was widely acclaimed in the 1950s but as tastes changed he was increasingly marginalized. As the blurb states the composer turned in upon himself, in acts of self destruction. By the 1980s he was institutionalized and his career seemed over. This work recounts the subsequent rehabilitation of the man and his music. It is dominated by the supreme achievement of Arnold’s nine symphonies.
